Kilts

Early Style Kilt Early Kilts. The early kilt was in two different forms: the  philamore (the great kilt, also known as the belted plaid,as worn in the illustration above) and the philabeg (small kilt).

The great kilt is a version consisting of five or so yards of 60 inches wide tartan which you pleat and put on with a belt to hold it on, there is no sewing involved.

The early kilt which we make ( as modelled here by our friend, Dietrich)  is a version more like a modern kilt where it is sewn as a garment. The difference between an early philabeg and a modern kilt is that the modern kilt has stitched down pleats and swings from the hips, where the early philabeg swings from the waist and the pleats are not stitched down. The early kilt tended to be worn much shorter, above the knee, and was not fringed at the side of the apron (front panel).
